Cannibalism as Competition Strategy in Larvae of the Acorn Weevil Curculio glandium (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

چکیده
Curculio glandium is one of the pre-dispersal seed predators occurring in Central Europe. It associated with Quercus robur, acorns which are shelter and food sources for developing larvae. Females species, to our knowledge, lacking marking pheromones or do not use them; therefore, nature, multiple infestations (over 10 eggs larvae) same host fruit can be found. Such density provoke very strong competition, was verified this study. The survival rate body mass 695 second-instar larvae, competing various test groups (one, three, five, eight ten offered acorn, were measured video recordings made order describe their behavior determine differences between groups. Experimental observations indicated that when larvae an acorn increased, significantly decreased—being lowest consisting individuals. In latter groups, also embryo completely consumed. Video footage, along presence dead, nibbled living ones covered scars resembling mouthparts, evidence aggression cannibalism second third larval instars—behavior scarce weevils phytophagous insects general. Results confirm assumption heavily infested oak fruits, competition individuals so it involves cannibalism, at time provides strongest additional nutrients.

Virulence of entomopathogenic nematodes to pecan weevil larvae, Curculio caryae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in the laboratory.
The pecan weevil, Curculio caryae (Horn), is a key pest of pecans in the Southeast. Entomopathogenic nematodes have been shown to be pathogenic toward the larval stage of this pest. Before this research, only three species of nematodes had been tested against pecan weevil larvae. In this study, the virulence of the following nine species and 15 strains of nematodes toward fourth-instar pecan we...

Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) strain A11, S. feltiae (Filipjev) strain SN, and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar strains HP88 and Georgia were tested for their efficacy as biological control agents of the pecan weevil, Curculio caryae (Horn), in pecan orchard soil-profile containers under greenhouse conditions. Percentage C. caryae parasitism by S. carpocapsae and H. bacteriophora strain ...

The objective of this study was to determine the susceptibility of the two primary direct insect pests of hazelnuts in Oregon to three species of entomopathogenic nematodes. The entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis marelatus Pt. Reyes, Steinernema carpocapsae All and Steinernema kraussei L137) were used in laboratory soil bioassays to determine their virulence against filbertworm, Cydia ...

The need to biologically control phytophagous insects has led researchers to consider using microorganisms to control insect pests in the field. On this basis, we decided to conduct field tests to determine the effectiveness of a commercial product made of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) against the key hazelnut pest Curculio nucum L. Trials were carried out in a hazelnut orchard in the province of ...

The evolution of digestive proteases during larval development of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier, 1790) has been studied. A progressive increase of protease activity has been found. The optimum pH for proteolytic activity against azocasein was determined. Caseinograms revealed an active complex of alkaline proteases from the early stages of the development. From the apparent molecular masse...
